This multi-block linocut project took a while to create, because it has many constituent parts!

It was inspired by an image by a photographer friend, Tullia Dean, of a wild red deer doe (or hind) grazing on leaves and twigs along the 'browse line' at Royal Richmond Park, London.

I love the stretch and pose of the animal, the strength and tension in the limbs.

The context of the deer provided opportunities for having a bit of fun with patterns and textures, which for me are the real joy of working in linocut. The deer is reaching up to eat leaves from some branches, but there was nothing very visually stimulating or remarkable about these branches or leaves in reality, so what could I make of them? I noticed that the leaves seemed to droop in groups, suggesting a circular motif, so I went with that. The resulting stylised leafy branches are done in two colours, with offset orbs of green behind. The grass is represented as patches of texture which come together under the deer to form its shadow, and the lino block is inked in a blend of colour to suggest distance.

This limited edition multi-block linocut is hand-printed in artists' quality oil-based printing inks on 150 gsm acid-free smooth cartridge paper.

The artwork is sold unframed for ease and economy of shipping, but I have included some app-generated images showing it framed, for visualisation purposes. It is despatched in a commercially-manufactured mount set, which comprises a mitre-cut textured off-white mount, backing board and cellophane bag. So not only is your purchase ready to present as a gift (if that is your plan with it), but the mount set, together with other robust packaging, protects the print during shipping. There is plenty of margin for framing and the mount set can be discarded, if you have other plans for the print. (Please refer to SHIPPING INFO for further details.)
